Theatre behemoth Cineplex is fighting back against a class action suit that alleges the chain tacks on unfair charges above its advertised ticket prices. “The $1.50 online booking fee sucks”, said a spokesperson for the Canadian advocacy group Citizens against Movie Rip Offs. “and if you don’t pay it, they make you wait and wait if you decide to pay personally at the ticket counter. Last week, I waited 2 hours in line to get a ticket for Barbie II – Pinker than Ever”, said the spokesperson.
In a press release, Cineplex defended the extra charges, and the way they hid them from customers when they first log onto the theatre’s website. “We want to make the online booking experience as easy as possible, and we don’t feel cluttering up the screen with extra information improves the customer interaction”. Besides obscuring the online booking fee, the company also vigorously defends its use of extra fees for bathroom use, fire exits, and breathing aids, such as air conditioning. “They all cost us money to implement”, exclaimed the spokesperson, adding that “we can’t continue to give the consumer such amazing movie going experiences, if we aren’t allowed to make a profit after filling the CEO’s swimming pools”.
